Yanapuma's Spanish program is recognized and authorized by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Education (registration number #1603DINEPP-MEC).
How Spanish Study Works . . .
Our standard Spanish program includes 20 hours per week, 4 hours per day, of either small group or one-to-one Spanish instruction. Classes normally run from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 2.00 PM to 6.00 PM, but if you would like to arrange a different class schedule, we can usually accommodate your needs. All of our classes are designed to be flexible to adapt to the specific needs and learning styles of the student.
Individual Spanish Classes at Yanapuma
At the start of your first class your teacher will provide you with all the information that you need to get the most out of your classes. This will include two short questionnaires that explore your learning style and preferences so that class activities can be optimally oriented.
Your teacher will also evaluate your current Spanish level across all dimensions, and on that basis a curriculum will be developed that meets your learning goals. If you would like to take a test we can arrange that for you, although it is not generally necessary.
To help keep classes interesting and active, we use a variety of teaching aids beyond the standard textbook, designed to help students to master all aspects of the Spanish language equally. Many of our teachers use laptops during class to take advantage of the wealth of online materials, news channels, etc that exist. We also encourage students to explore Quito’s many attractions with their teacher during classes as an addition to more formal in-class study. These outings can include trips to Quito’s Old Town, walks through the New Town and the Northern sector, museums, zoo, universities, markets, and other places of interest.

GroupSpanish Classes at Yanapuma
We run two types of group classes at Yanapuma - Beginner Group Classes and Small Group Classes for a couple or friends traveling together. Beginner Group Classes start on the first Monday of each month and follow a set format designed to cover the basics over a 4-week period. You can read all about them here. For a couple or friends studying together, the format is essentially the same as above for the individual classes, with the teacher taking into account the requirements of each student and working out a curriculum and plan that satisfies the needs and learning style of both.
About Our Teaching . . .
Our Spanish curriculum offers the highest standards of teaching by highly experienced and qualified teachers, all of whom are certified in teaching Spanish as a foreign language, and almost all hold university degrees.
At Yanapuma, we have developed a unique philosophy and practice of teaching Spanish and native languages, based on modern communication methodology. Our methodology is developed cooperatively by our teachers themselves—the people who are most knowledgeable in effective methods of language learning and teaching—and they work hard to continually improve the program based on student feedback.
Our teachers bring experience from their professional lives in other areas as well, including knowledge of the history, culture, traditions, politics and customs of Ecuador and Latin America. Through this experience, they have the talent and dedication for teaching Spanish in a manner that is both professional and engaging, sharing their experience and knowledge with the student.
The Learning Environment . . .
The learning environment at Yanapuma is different from many schools, with an open café-style setting with plenty of natural light and a comfortable ambience. We strive to provide an optimal learning environment in a relaxed atmosphere to permit the student to learn Spanish at an optimal pace. We encourage students to feel at home and use our facilities as a comfortable base from which to explore Quito. Look around our school.
We also offer optional conversation sessions, cooking and salsa classes, movie nights, and other social activities to keep life outside of Spanish classes interesting.
