A Weekend in the Amazon! |

29 December 2009 We had a great trip to the jungle last weekend. Vinicio took us over the high mountains, through the paramo, and into the upper Amazon basin to meet the Quichua. The people of the community of Chichicorumi welcomed us, and our guide, Hector, told us the history of the tribe, and their ecotourism program that provides jobs and income for community members. Hector showed us the medicinal plants his tribe uses, and we met the animals living in the community. Wooly, spider, and capuchin monkeys, capybaras, and a couple of toucans with brilliant blue beaks who hopped, perched, and posed for photos. Everyone played with the animals and took photos of each other holding them. We hiked to a beautiful waterfall where we swam and watched for birds and monkeys in the trees. Along the way Hector showed us the local plants and told us about their uses.Saturday night we had dinner at the community, a tasty meal of chicken (eggs for the vegetarians) lentils, patacones (flattened cakes of plantain fried to a golden brown) and tropical juices. Sunday morning we went tubing on the Rio Napo, one of the major rivers of the Ecuadorian Amazon. After another delicious meal of local food at Chichicorumi we headed home, tired and happy.
