A Weekend in Otavalo and Chilcapamba

Five students at Yamapuma and our teacher, Vinicio, went on a weekend  excursion to Otavalo and to the nearby community of Chilca Pamba. Our first stop was the animal market in Otavalo where the locals sell Cuy, a traditional dish served in Ecuador. In the pouring rain, which didn't stop us from shopping, we next wandered about the largest and most famous marketplace in Ecuador, admiring all the local handicrafts and wares. By afternoon we were drenched but continued our trek to the waterfalls near the tiny village of Peguche. Later that evening we traveled by truck to Chilca Pamba where we were greeted by a local family who served us a delicious meal. To top the day off a local musical group played traditional songs and we all got a chance to dance!

Sunday morning we visited the family garden and saw the wide array of local vegetables, fruits, herbs, and medicinal plants used in everyday life. We also toured a weaving shop and watched how yarns and tapestries  are made. With little time to spare, we then hiked to scenic Laguna Cuicoha and caught a boat ride around the lake before heading back to Quito Sunday evening.
