Medical Services in Quito and Ecuador:

In our experience from talking to students here, medical authorities in North American and Eruopean countries often over-exaggerate greatly the risks, and recommend options that may not really be necessary. Vaccinations are available here from reputable hospitals and clinics at prices that are often very much cheaper than in your home country. And you can buy malaria and other prophylactic medications over the counter for your travels.

Health care in Quito is very good. There are many good hospitals and clinics where you can get emergency treatment if necessary. All the places that you are most likely to be in Ecuador are no more than a few hours from reliable and comprehensive health care.

One option that we can recommend is to contact a family practice in Cumbayá, which is just outside Quito. You can read about them on their website. They speak English and can make recommendations based on local experience and extensive medical knowledge.
